Is 1 to 1 Computing a Gimmick?

After a couple of weeks off, Ben is back....with another Ben! That's right! Pete has the episode off, so I had the opportunity to ask Ben Tomlinson, a former teacher in the district, a few pointed questions dealing with laptops, 1 to 1 computing, and how to bring more collaborative work into a high school classroom. We bounce through a few questions left over from our beginning of the year list from our high school teachers, question Ben about his thoughts on smart watches, and spend a good deal of time discussing the significance of every student having a device vs. every student having access to a device through shared or collaborative models for learning.

    Great subject and listen. I believe one of the biggest current challenges is that achieving 1:1 is viewed as the outcome rather than a strategy or tool for achieving an instructional outcome. There are also other challenges (budget, support, ease of use, fit for purpose), but currently we have little evidence of the ROI/VOI of this type of technology investment, - which is counter intuitive to us knowing that we live in a technology rich world which should be mirrored in our learning environments.

    Thanks for the great comment, Daryl! You've hit the nail on the head. We look at 1:1 access as the end game, as if it will be the solution to a number of problems, when it fact it's just the start of a new journey and realization for learning that creates much more interesting problems and possibilities for teachers. I can only hope that as schools become closer to that 1:1 environment, they finally begin to see that the answer doesn't lie in having more devices, but rather how you leverage them to focus on good student learning.
