On the heels of the Tupac biopic "All eyes on me" debuting, Boxman & Anthony review Gang Related.

Gang Related is a 1997 crime thriller film written and directed by Jim Kouf. In this movie, corrupt cops Divinci (James Belushi) and Rodriguez (Tupac Shakur) have been murdering drug dealers and then selling their narcotics. But they accidentally kill an undercover DEA agent, and soon after the murder, the dead man's partner, Simms (Gary Cole), comes calling. In search of a scapegoat, Divinci and Rodriguez find a homeless alcoholic they call Joe Doe (Dennis Quaid). But keeping up the scheme becomes increasingly dangerous and complex, and the DEA grows suspicious of the crooked duo.

  • Some fun facts.
The movie was cut down quite a bit compared to the original script, about 40-45 minutes including a different opening involving brief flashes of the crimes committed by the dirty cops and there was two deleted scenes that were shot as well.
    1. A brief comedy bit with Reggie Miller as a Hot Dog vendor.
    2. Tupac and Jim Belushi's characters at the funeral of the slain DEA agent involving Gary Cole's character launching into a brief monologue about loyalty/brotherhood between members of law enforcement. Both scenes have yet to make it onto DVD or the Blu-Ray re-release.
I loved this movie's soundtrack, perfectly suited the Neo-Noir ambiance of the film. If you don't have it pick it up on eBay/Amazon, you won't regret it!!!
