Diesel Driving Death March

Chris Hayes published on
Jeff Glucker updated on

Jeff Glucker and Blake Z. Rong head into the Podcast Business Office to prattle on about cars. The main topic of the evening is Rong's recent participation in the Audi A3 TDI Mileage Challenge. He was tasked with driving from Albuquerque, New Mexico to San Diego... on one tank of diesel fuel. That's 824 miles of driving required. That's damn near impossible, but two teams managed to pull it off.

From there the talk moves to the recent Motor Press Guild Track Day event, where Glucker got seat time in a variety of vehicles out at Willow Springs.

    Jeff, good back and forth.

Sorry I did not get to speak with Blake for much other than a few minutes over the entire three days but glad to see him there.

Need to speak with your third guy about running a diesel dry. It is lubrication more than cooling. Once dry, the lines are vapor locked and tough to restart without purging as well. Fortunately the new Audi EA288s fuel system has a design that will allow them to start after running dry and being refueled. Audi's techs and Engineers tried it just to make sure.

Was Blake speaking about Don B. in a negative tone?

Here are the #TDIChallenge participant’s stories that I can find so far:

Great to interact with many of them one on one. To see them all come within 15 to 20 percent of my results was pretty impressive although some were running a little too slow in some places for their own good. ;)

Finally, I ran the course backwards at the PSL + with 80 + mph jaunts on the interstates and PSL on the state highways. 52.3 mpg was the result. Not bad from a 31/43/35 mpgUS city/highway/combined rated modern compact sports sedan from the Brand of Four Rings.
