Episode 18

Forgiveness: An Unpopular View

Godd Show published on

This week's episode bares some resemblance to that feeling you got when your parents told you Santa doesn't exist. After talking for more than an hour on racial reconciliation, we decided it was a good idea to record or show on an equally uplifting subject: forgiveness.

Preach It!

Every few months we hear a sermon on Matthew 5:23-24, which says "So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift." The sermon typically takes the path that if you forgive those that have wronged and offended you, then you free yourself. Every time I hear it preached on, the implication is that forgiveness does and is more for you than the person being forgiven.

The problem is, that's not the type of forgiveness we see God displaying.

I'm think it's about, Forgiveness

Colossians 3:13 says, "bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive." And while this scripture is directed at Christians for Christians, the big take away is that we forgive as God forgives. This episode is directed at that side of forgiveness. The side that is for the other person. That reveals the fruit of the Holy Spirt. It frees the other person and creates a path, as Jesus did, to be reconciled to God.
