Crazy Complications!

Matt Farah published on

In this episode, Cameron and Matt explore the world of complicated watches. A complication is any function that a mechanical watch performs besides simply displaying the time, such as a chronograph, or, most commonly, a date window. We start with the basics and then show advanced annual and perpetual calendar complications, check out the "Master of Complication" Franck Muller's bizarre watches, the new Rolex Skydweller, the incredible JLC Duometre that is really two watches in one, and a Memovox mechanical alarm watch! We also discuss how moon phase complications work, "minute repeater" chiming watches, and the half-million dollar Grand Complication watches that can only be serviced by the one person who made them.

  • The only complication I would never get is the tourbillon. Take a wonderful watch with in many cases a beautiful dial and lets punch a monster hole in the dial. Throw in a bunch of parts that look like an alien mechanical spider barfed in the hole and that 's my opinion of the looks of said tourbillon. I have never liked the look and I understand the mechanical complexity behind the item, but still I hate the way it looks..
My only other Complication weirdness is it must have a date window. I have never bought a dateless watch.
Keep up the great podcast . It has re awakened my interest in watches .
