Charles, Love the discussion of D.C. I subscribe to "White Supremacy" theory of Confederate Memorials. Racism isn't a Southern thing. It is a specific symbol to Black America that they should keep in their place. Same with the Confederate/Nazi flags. Presidential traditions are one thing. The rise of confederate memorials coincide with deteriorating racial relations. Thinking generously of confederate soldiers is part of our "White Family" narrative. Thats why confederate memorials are in Montana & Iowa. I think your narrative of confederate memorials would be a bit different if your family was a target of the KKK, Our white heritage gives us the advantage to overlook the implied meaning to these memorials.
